The evidence is in: Chinese courts use judicial blockchain platform to store data

China’s judicial blockchain platform has stored more than 2.6 billion pieces of evidence, a Supreme People’s Court spokesman said at a press conference on Thursday, according to a report by the local media Legal Daily.

  • The amount of evidence stored on the judicial blockchain platform has increased by 18% since May 25, 2022.
  • Shang Chenglin, chief engineer of the Supreme Court Information Center, said the Supreme Court is further studying the application of blockchain evidence verification, smart contracts and cross-chain collaboration, along with the Supreme People’s Procuratorate and the Ministry of Justice, according to the report.
  • The judicial blockchain platform is a blockchain consortium initiated by the Supreme Court of China, which connects the blockchains belonging to various local courts in China.
  • In May, the Supreme People’s Court called for more courts to adopt blockchain technology and proposed cross-chain cooperation between courts, law enforcement and regulators.
  • In September 2018, China’s Supreme People’s Court issued a new rule recognizing blockchain technology as a legitimate means of collecting tamper-proofing data.
