Web3 Job Fair Coming To a Metaverse Near You

Club Penguin, meet professional networking. In the metaverse. Really.

It’s all stemming from an inaugural Web3 job fair that will be hosted in the metaverse on Feb. 16 and 17.

Presented by marketing agency Hype, the virtual networking event will take place on Gather — connecting crypto firms such as BNB Chain, The Graph and DFINITY — with over 2,000 professionals indicating a Web3 interest.

Attendees will be able to explore technical and non-technical roles across Web3 projects, James Ross, Hype’s managing director, exclusively told Blockworks.

More than 67,000 tech professionals have already been laid off in 2023, according to Ross.

“We want to help as many of them as possible find new opportunities at the Web3 Job Fair,” he said.

The job fair is open to attendees worldwide, though Hype says it is screening would-be participants prior to the event.

“Companies that are sponsoring the event will be attending,” Ross said. “They’ve told us the profiles of people they want to meet and the locations they are looking to hire from, so we’re doing a bit of matchmaking behind the scenes.”

Attendee avatars and more

Attendees will be able to create their own avatar characters prior to entering the virtual event space.

Once an avatar enters the digital event, they’re free to walk around the virtual job jair and interact with other attendees, tune in to speakers and attend workshops facilitated by sponsors.

“We have a number of speaker sessions which will be taking place across the two days,” Noelle Nikkhah, head of events and brand innovation at Hype, told Blockworks. “Everything from tokenomics, product design, marketing — these speakers are friends of Hype, and people who’ve worked with before.”

The event also has a gaming area — with go-kart races on its agenda — and a curated NFT gallery. Not to mention many meeting lounges.

Each sponsor will have their own space in the virtual world, where prospective hires can drop resumes, and companies can display interactive slides showcasing their culture and values.

A video screen will automatically pop up if an attendee walks by another character, unless the users enter a private space.

“If you’re in a private space it means that no one outside of that will be able to hear you,” Noelle Nikkhah, head of events and brand innovation at Hype, told Blockworks. “So the interviews will take place in there.”

Entering the metaverse

Job fairs are not the only real-world events making metaverse moves.

Beyond popular gaming projects such as Decentraland and Sandbox, smaller companies such as Spotselfie are also leaning in, allowing students to create digital stores. They can also sell products and services by claiming digital land on campus.

Ultimately, the metaverse is about exchanging ideas and knowledge, Robert Parry, recruitment director at Hype, said in a statement.

“Web3 Job Fair is about more than networking. It’s a place to exchange ideas and knowledge about the best ways to make decentralized tech more accessible to the masses,” Parry said.
