ETH Founder Talks Against Transferable Governance, Community Reacts

The governance debate is heating up as Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) become more popular in the blockchain space. Earlier this week, Ethereum (ETH) founder Vitalik Buterin highlighted the paradox of distributing energy exclusively to a select few and the freedom to distribute choice energy. Buterin brought up an ancient saying in a tweet, stating that power-hungry people are not suitable to lead. The Ethereum creator emphasized that the statement can be extended to DAOs and said that DAOs with transferable administration tokens violate the entire concept of DAOs. Buterin said that transferring governance empowers those seeking power.

Offensive Response By The Community

While the Ethereum creator provides a decibel level, some have responded with opposing views. The Twitter user Muki commented that delegating choice energy is «inevitable.» As said by a community member, expecting everyone to participate is unrealistic, and a voluntary delegation of decision-making power is preferable to making rash decisions or not participating at all. Willyogo, a Twitter user, added to the conversation by saying that holding transferable governance tokens does not equate to being desirous. Nevertheless, the forum user also remarked that there is potential for improvement for DAOs regarding voting processes. Vagobond, a Twitter user, also jumped in, noting that having completely recallable delegates is a technique to transfer ahead. While others focused on governance mechanisms, some pointed to the use of blockchain-based scientific disciplines, such as leveraging verified randomization to pick essential roles in a DAO. Another community member recommended selecting token holders at random and rotating when the designated holder is not present on-chain.
