Damus App Faces Removal From Apple Store For Violating Payment Rules

Decentralized social networking app Damus has announced that it will be removed from the Apple App Store within 14 days. Apple made the decision after it discovered that content creators could use the app to sell digital content. Damus’ zaps feature allows users to earn Bitcoins for posts or tip bitcoins for posts, which violates Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines.

Apple sent a letter to Damus stating that the app was in violation of Guideline 3.1.1 – Business – Payments – In-App Purchase. The company noticed that Damus allows users to send “tips” associated with receiving content from digital content creators with a mechanism other than in-app purchases.

The removal of Damus from the App Store could have significant implications for the entire ecosystem of apps with lightning integration and v4v. This is because if people can’t transact freely peer-to-peer on their platform, it could hinder the growth of decentralized social networks.

To ensure the app’s availability on the App Store, Damus must submit an updated version that complies with the App Store Review Guidelines within 14 days of the date of the message. Failure to do so will result in the app being removed from sale. If the app is removed, the TestFlight version of this app will also be unavailable for external and internal testing, and all public TestFlight links will no longer be functional.
